Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is additional funding given by the UK government to state-funded schools in England to help improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged pupils.

Who qualifies?

Schools receive extra funding for each pupil who is:

  • Eligible for free school meals (FSM) or has been within the last 6 years

  • Looked-after children (LAC) or previously looked-after (e.g., adopted from care)

Why does it exist?

The aim is to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. Research shows that economic disadvantage can negatively impact educational progress, so the funding supports those most likely to face barriers.

Who is entitled to Free School Meals?

Your child may be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) if you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Income Support

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Support from NASS (National Asylum Support Service) under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit (and not Working Tax Credit) with an annual household income of £16,190 or less

  • Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

  • Universal Credit

If your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please register even if they will not have school lunches. Registration increases the school’s funding through the Pupil Premium, allowing us to provide additional support for pupils.

Pupil Premium Strategy

As a school, we publish a Pupil Premium Strategy, which outlines:

  • How we plan to use this additional funding to support pupils

  • The impact of last year’s spending

  • Our priorities for improving outcomes for disadvantaged learners
